Headache & Migraine Care
The Woodlands & Spring, Texas

Many recurring headaches are driven by the neck and the muscles around it. If yours start at the base of your skull or come with a stiff neck, we can help.

Not All Headaches Start in Your Head

Tension-type headaches and cervicogenic headaches (headaches that come from the neck) are some of the most common types, and both are closely tied to the joints and muscles of the upper neck.

The nerves of the upper neck share pathways with nerves in the head. When the top joints of the neck are stiff or the muscles around them are tight, pain can be referred up and forward, often felt behind the eyes, at the temples, or across the forehead.

Migraines are a neurological condition with their own triggers. Chiropractic care does not replace medical management for migraines, but some patients find that easing neck and upper back tension helps reduce how often or how strongly their headaches happen.

How We Help With Headaches

Headache care starts with understanding your pattern. Keeping a simple headache log before your visit is helpful. A typical plan includes:

1

History & Exam

We review your headache pattern, triggers, and medical history, and examine your neck and upper back

2

Upper Neck Care

Gentle adjustments and soft-tissue work for the joints and muscles of the upper neck

3

Release Tension

Softwave TRT for persistent trigger points in the neck and shoulders

4

Prevent

Posture exercises, workstation changes, and nutrition guidance for common triggers

If your headaches suggest something that needs a medical workup, we will refer you to your primary care doctor or a neurologist.

When to Get Medical Care Right Away

Most cases are not an emergency, but some symptoms need prompt medical attention. Contact your doctor right away, or call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if symptoms are sudden or severe, if you have:

Seek urgent care for:

  • A sudden, severe "worst headache of your life"
  • Headache with fever and a stiff neck
  • Headache with weakness, numbness, confusion, vision loss, or trouble speaking
  • A new headache after a head injury
  • New or changing headaches after age 50

Headaches & Migraines Questions

Can a chiropractor help with headaches?
Research supports chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation and exercise, for tension-type and neck-related (cervicogenic) headaches. Results vary from person to person, and your exam determines whether your headaches are likely to respond.
Can chiropractic care help migraines?
Some patients with migraines report fewer or milder episodes when neck and upper back tension is addressed. Chiropractic care is best used alongside, not instead of, the care your medical doctor provides for migraines.
What is a cervicogenic headache?
It is a headache caused by a problem in the neck, often the joints or muscles of the upper cervical spine. It usually starts at the back of the head and may be worse with certain neck movements or positions.
How many visits does it take to see a difference?
Many patients notice a change in how often or how strongly headaches happen within the first several visits. Dr. Etemadi will set expectations after reviewing your history and exam.
Should I stop my headache medication?
No. Keep taking any medication your doctor has prescribed. Talk with your physician before making any changes.
