Understanding Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It most often starts in the feet and can move up the legs or appear in the hands.
Diabetes is the most common cause, but neuropathy can also come from vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), certain medications including chemotherapy, alcohol use, thyroid problems, autoimmune conditions, and nerve compression. Sometimes no cause is found.
